Quintuplets!
One of Rich's co-worker's wives is having quintuplets! Here is a link to her fascinating blog: http://wilkinsonquints.blogspot.com/ and a link to their family's website, if you are interested in helping/donating (they'll need it!) : http://www.wilkinsonquints.com/index.htm.

FYI
Ok - if you haven't signed up for Austin Tidbits (http://www.austintidbits.com) bi-weekly e-mail you are missing out! Today's email was on sushi. I thought the site they highlighted was informative: http://www.austinsushi.com. According to Musashino (austinsushi.com's choice for best sushi restaurant in Austin), here are some sushi eating etiquette tips:
- Eat sushi in one bite or mouthful to enjoy the full flavor of the fish. Cutting or biting sushi in half will lift the fish off the rice, which is called "nare" (no air between rice and fish) and will not make the sushi as flavorful.
- To avoid sushi breakage, first tip the piece of sushi sideways and then lightly dip it in the soy sauce. Put sushi in your mouth upside down.
- It is best to eat sushi with your hands. (really! I never knew that one!)
- It is best to keep the wasabi and soy sauce separate.
- Using your fingers or chopsticks, apply the wasabi straight on the fish.

Typical Lunch?
Moms out there - I know you will relate to this typical lunch with two kids . . .
I, of course, preceeded this lunch with trying to get too much done. While Liza was napping, Sophie and I hurriedly baked two different kinds of cookies and made a mess because, of course, you will make a mess when baking with a three year old!
When lunch time rolled around at noon, I fixed Sophie her lunch of fajitas - chicken with peppers, beans, and queso, which she proceeded in taking completely apart and scraping the tortilla against her plate to get rid of the queso which was too "spicy" for her.
Meanwhile, Liza wakes up from her nap. I get her up and start fixing my own leftover fajitas. By the time I finish getting them ready, Liza gets fussy, so I give her a pacifier, hold her, and start trying to eat my lunch. Next, the phone rings. My sweet husband. I try to give him an update on the car repair while finishing my bite of food, holding the pacifier in Liza's mouth and helping Sophie get down from the table because she has finished her lunch, sort of.
While I'm talking to Rich, Sophie gets on her stool to wash her hands at the kitchen sink. Except this time, she trys to wash them by turning on the sprayer, which of course, soaks the front of her shirt as well as her hands. Being the independent girl she is, Sophie runs up stairs to "change clothes." She comes back down with a new set of clothes naked (except for socks) and asks for help getting dressed all while I am holding Liza, finishing my conversation with Rich, and trying to eat my lunch.
The humor of the moment struck me looking around at my dirty, wet, messy kitchen. I finished my lunch at 1:30 . . .

It Must Be Monday
Well, what can I say other than some days are better than others. The first event of the morning was opening the refrigerator and getting out the orange juice which I proceeded on shaking because that is what you do with orange juice before drinking it. Little did I know, the top wasn't actually on the orange juice. The orange juice flew out of the carton onto my shirt and all over the floor. No big deal - it is clean the floor day today. I have dealt with worse.
Next up, time to go to the dentist for Sophie's first dentist appointment. When it was finally Sophie's turn, the very nice dental hygienist showed Sophie all the instruments she would put into Sophie's mouth - big mistake. Sophie at this point put her lamby in her mouth bit down hard and clenched her arms around my waist. She wasn't going anywhere. After a dozen attempts to get her to lay down on the chair including having her lay on top of me, we were getting no where.
Next we decided that the dental hygienist could just use a normal princess toothbrush with Sophie sitting on my lap. (Couldn't we have started with that?) Nope, that didn't work. Finally the Dentist decides he'll have a go at getting Sophie to open her mouth including taking her away from me crying and forcefully sitting her on his lap. This is at the point that Liza decides that she is missing out on all the chaos. I had been feeding her and she stops, starts crying and then throws up all over me and the dentist's floor. Yes, that's right, I said threw up. It wasn't just a little throw up, either, it was a lot.
When we finally get that mess cleaned up, the Dentist makes one more go at Sophie including blowing up a latex glove like a balloon and drawing a face on it to make her laugh. She calms down a little, but still no go. The dentist then tells her that he is the "fun" dentist and that if she won't open her mouth she'll have to go to a special dentist that gives her medicine. (Excuse me?) Finally, he shows her all the toys that should could have chosen if she had opened her mouth. Then he takes away the balloon glove that he had given her and throws it away because it has deflated and he is afraid of her hurting herself with it. I don't think we will be going to the dentist again any time soon. I think we might need a new dentist, too.
Oh, but the morning is not over yet. You might not believe what I write next, but it is true, I promise. I call Richard to tell him our dentist escapades and he very sweetly says he'll come home for lunch. I get the girls down for their naps and I just happen to look out the window and see Richard walking down the street. The problem is his car is no where to be seen. I meet him at the front door to hear that his car has died on his way home.

Sunday Afternoon Fun
Rich got the idea from the Dawsons to make Sophie a doodle bug house, so Sophie spent an hour looking for bugs. She told us she was a "hunter."
Afterwards, we had craft time and made a cat mask. (I got some very inexpensive craft kits from JoAnns for Sophie to do this summer and I couldn't wait any longer to make one with her. They are on sale right now - here's the link: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat23848.) She had fun "decorating."

Three Year Old Exchange
Mom: "Please don't put that ring in your mouth you could choke and die." (I promise I'm not trying to scare her . . .)
Sophie: "Mom, we are all going to die." (what, is she 13?)
Mom: "Yes, sweetheart, we will all die one day." (hopefully not for a long, long time)
Sophie: "We have lots of people to meet in heaven."
Mom: "Yes, we do."
Sophie: "Daddy says he is really looking forward to meeting John."
Mom: "Who is John?"
Sophie: "You know, the guy that baptized Jesus."

VI Road Show
When you get a chance, check out Rich's blog for National Instruments: http://viroadshow.blogspot.com/. It is a blog that mainly shows all the cool things NI customers do with LabVIEW and their products.
Rachel Ray
The other day at dinner, I was teasing Sophie that I didn't ever want her to grow up and she had to live at home forever, and being her typical three year old independent self, she said she had to grow up and leave one day. Then I asked her what she would do when she was an "adult," and she said she wanted to be "Rachel Ray," which was too cute to Richard and me because as long as Sophie has been alive she has LOVED food. She helps me cook almost every night. Richard asked her what her favorite part of cooking was and she said "licking." Here is a picture of our future chef.

Water Babies
We've been enjoying some warmer temperatures lately in Austin. Here are a couple pictures of my water babies:
